In our letter of yesterday we fear we did not lay suffi·

cient stress on the Texas Company's request to take the matter up

with the Home Government.

The Texas Company desires us to put before you its re-

quest that the business be handled in the way arranged between us because it is quite obvious that a sudden change of arrangement a

would do great harm to the business, a contingency which they are

not likely to submit to without a struggle.

To this we may add that, what ever happens we ourselves

are determined not to surrender the business to Messrs. Shewan Tomes

& Co. who by their behaviour in this matter have made it quite im-

possible for us to trust them any longer. As regards our agent

Mr.Cheetham, we can only say that, apart from our contractual

obligations towards him, we are bound in honour to support him

until we have clear proof that he is guilty of whatever is alleged

against him.
